Commonwealth Games 2010
In 1930 in Ontario, Canada all nations currently or formerly owned by the British Empire gathered together to play games that you have probably never heard of such as lawn bowls, rugby sevens, net ball. Australia has won 11 games, England has 7, and Canada with 1. There are 54 members of the commonwealth nations and 71 teams participate in them. As exciting as this history may be this year the commonwealth games were held in Delhi, India from October 3-14. It was the largest multi sporting event to be held in India ever. Despite troubles with a developing country including lots of traffic, some violence, and huge disorganization India managed to get their act together and get things running smoothly. In the end the final results were Australia in first with 177 total medals, England in second with 143 total medals, and India in a surprising third with 101. As far as sports go in India they really only had ultimate domination in cricket but what with these games and India's great performance this could inspire a whole new generation of other sports in India. We already saw a glimpse of this in 2008 when India placed an amazing performance in Beijing during the Olympics with a gold in shooting, or the golds India had a while ago in their official national sport, field hockey. Overall I think these games were a success and had a huge positive impact on India.
