The Nation's New Health Care Bill

The Nation’s New Health Care Bill

Barack Obama’s health care bill, which he has been trying to pass for all of his presidency, has recently been granted by Congress. The House of Representatives voted yes, but the vote was close: 220 agreed, and 207 opposed. President Obama signed the bill on March 23, 2010. Following that, the bill was also passed in the Senate, 56 to 43. In both the House and the Senate, the Republicans unanimously voted against the bill. In the Senate, only three of fifty-nine Democrats voted no, and in the House of Representatives, just thirty-two of two hundred fifty-three were resistant.
The main point of the bill is to give health insurance to those who have lost their jobs and cannot pay their medical bills. Children can be under insurance coverage from their parents up to age 26, rather than previous state laws for young adults who could have been supported until age 18 or 19. A member of Consumers Union, Bill Vaughan, says, “We think it’s a big step forward.”
